Review of Hereafter (2010) by Nün S — 28 Jun 2011
Call me a soft touch, but this film moved me. Great casting, acting, direction and a wonderful story. Always a risk when someone produces an afterlife film, and like all others, the writer presents what he believes is the definitive, unquestionable destiny of our spirit after we die.
Whilst one of the characters doubts Christian and Islamic afterlife theories, this film nonetheless presents no attack on any religion or philosophy except atheism, but then, it does not clarify if the place where all the spirits reside is a singular entity made up by a connected multitude i.
E. God/Heaven, or whether they roam around aimlessly and rudderless, i.e. a godless spirit world. The films descrition of all the spirits being omniscient and omnipresent, changeable in form, existing beyond time and space, etc.
.. does however, give a nod to many aspects of afterlife belief in orthodox Christian mysticism. I didn't find this slow - I was enthralled from start to finish - but there is obviously, a large number of people who will find this tedious and full of mumbo-jumbo, in spite of a couple of terrifying and realistic disaster scenes.
It all depends in the end, on how you're wired. You'll either love it, or hate it.
