Review of Here Comes the Boom (2012) by Kenneth C — 02 Mar 2013
Like I mentioned in my review of A League of Their Own, I watched 3 sports films in a row. The last of the 3, and definitely the weakest, was Here Comes the Boom. That's right, the Kevin Smith film that I don't recall a whole lot of people going to or talking about. But, let's see if it's got anything to bring to the sports movie table.
The film is about a biology teacher (Kevin Smith), who was once Teacher of the Year, but since has grown lazy and given up caring. When the Music Teacher Marty (Henry Winkler) needs to raise money to keep his class around, Scott decides to join MMA fights.
The main thing that I disliked about this movie was that it seemed so cliche. It was very easy to predict, first of all. The humor style also felt old. The way it was done seemed like it wanted to be School of Rock, but where that one was funny and creative, this is just Sandler and Smith's excuse to put something out.
The acting is up and down. Smith and Winkler do an alright job, but Salma Hayek as the love interest was boring, useless, and poorly acted. The real MMA fighters also do a bad job, but I guess they're more excuseable.
The film also didn't follow up on all of the stories that it started. It's revealed that the Music Teacher is having a baby. This is fine, but at a point the writers seemed to have forgotten. I think just losing his job was enough, and that they didn't need the addition of the baby. I was expecting to see it maybe in the last scene, but no.
Not all the jokes fall flat, but it just seems like another Adam Sandler movie without Adam Sandler. And, where it may be funnier that That's My Boy or Grown Ups, it's just as bland.
In the end, Here Comes the Boom is a film that I'm easily going to forget. It wasn't completely unfunny, but God was it boring. I definitely cannot recommend this one.
