Review of Here Comes the Boom (2012) by Tyler R — 15 Jun 2013
Low expectations were the name of the game for this one. Actually, I had no expectations for this because it didn't interest me, so I never caught it in theaters. Well, Starz got it and I didn't have much of anything to do, so I decided to give it a go.
Well, I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. Here Comes the Boom follows a teacher who, in order to save the school's music program, takes up MMA fighting. The film is alright. It's entertaining to an extent, with Kevin James being the most tolerable that I've ever seen.
As for the rest of the actors, they're alright. Henry Winkler is Henry Winkler, so there isn't much to say there. Everyone else just seems to be there. The film is predictable and clichéd, but it never shys away from that, so that's commendable.
The film had some major tone issues, though. Some parts were straight comedy, while other parts tip toed into the dramatic side, never finding a balance. By the time the credits rolled, I didn't think of it as a waste of time, merely a passable, if not entirely forgettable, experience.
