Review of Hercules (2014) by John E — 06 Mar 2011
Another admirable job on Disney's part. I can't think of any other company that can chop up, transmogrify, and reassimilate aspects of other stories/mythos to make a movie without taking any flak, but Disney always comes up smelling like roses.
The historical and mythological discrepancies can't even bother to be dealt with, so when examining the movie's merits as a movie, the Disney magic shines through. The music is fantastic as usual, as is the animation and voice cast.
Disney always seems to pick exactly the right voice for a villain and James Woods is among the best crop of Disney villains for his unctuous, slightly sleazy interpretation of Hades. The movie is among Disney's funniest efforts (like Aladdin) but to me, Pain and Panic were extremely annoying and I frankly wish Hades would have incinerated them to death, not just to the point that they make silly faces.
This and Mulan are the last solid efforts of the Disney Renaissance.
