Review of Hercules (2014) by Aj V — 09 Aug 2011
8th in the Disney Renaissance.
Animation wise, the film provides an interesting look. It looks like something from 60's Disney animation yet it still looks different and unique, the coloring also makes it look nice and in a way "divine". The animation shines most quite possibly during the action scenes of the film, it looks great while adding a more serious look for the film without ruining the comedic tone.
The music is possibly the weakest from the studio throughout this era. Nothing is memorable and the Gospel feel of the music just does not mesh with the film. Though admittedly the score does work nicely with the film.
Hilarious characters who each have their moments in the film to shine, and some who're not hilarious but are there to provide some heart, either way the characters are all entertaining. Hades alone, voiced by James Woods is worth watching this movie for, every line that comes out of him is just great. The rest of the characters are fun sure, but if only one reason could be given to watch the film it would be Hades.
Very hilarious in the story department, even if it's inaccurate. The nice thing in the film's story is that it still makes references to Greek stories that only fans of Greek Mythology will get, showing that the people behind it knew the stories and just wanted to do something more for silly fun. Hercules' road from zero to hero is done well and at most times hilarious.
Much like "Pocahontas", a lot of the hate for this film stems from it's inaccuracy, unlike that there's more praise for this film because this made the wise choice of being more of a comedic take on the story. "Hercules" is a must watch comedy.
