Review of Hercules (2014) by Marcus M — 13 Jun 2013
Watching this after Nostalgia Chick's review of it, I'd have to agree that it is full of cliches, overused tropes, sidekicks and montages (Yep, more than one). However, it was still charming and entertaining with interesting characters in Hades and Megara. Phil constantly using becoming a hero in Thebes as a thin metaphor for becoming a star in New York or Hollywood was really cheesy and juvenile.
The music was really good, in my opinion. My favourite songs were "I won't say I'm in love" and "Zero to Hero." I think the choice of gospel music makes sense because the movie is about the mythology of the Greeks which is like the Bible to Christians (probably their main audience a the time). The story is about a God, therefore why not music about God? It makes sense. Also, gospel music is really inspirational and energetic, which pairs nicely with a coming-of-age, action hero genre of story.
