Review of Hercules (1999) by Adam S — 21 Dec 2012
Nostalgia definitely plays a role in this rating, but damnit all I'm giving it a 5 anyway. Along with Aladdin, this was one of my favorite Disney movies as a kid. Those 2 were the Disney movies for boys, with the comedy and adventure we all loved.
As with any Disney movie, they take a story that already exists and create their own mythology out of it. Really this movie's story owes more to the first Christopher Reeves Superman than it does the actual legends of Hercules. But does that make it bad? No! I love this movie, and I love seeing Disney basically doing a superhero film. The weird pop-y style to it with the Little Shop of Horrors-esque gospel choir and strange world they live in that's a weird cross of ancient Greece and the world of today (with comical old school versions of our technology) is kind of weird, but I think it works, and creates a strange and unique style. And then there's Hades. Do I really need to say anymore? It's James freaking Woods as a Disney villain, and he's hilarious. You're not rooting for him, he's not a likable character, but he's an enjoyable one and quite possibly my favorite Disney villain.
It's funny, it's got good heart, a fun story, great animation, great songs. It's just great, no complaints.
