Review of Hercules (1997) by Ryan V — 13 Mar 2012
Based on the ancient folk tale, this Disney product features Hercules (Josh Keaton), a god who is stolen from Mt. Olympus as a baby and winds up growing up among humans. He eventually discovers the divine secrets of his heritage, but it becomes apparent that he won't be allowed to claim his birthright until he can prove himself as a hero.
Herc is subtly opposed by a jealous Hades (James Woods), and the main thrust of this film's drama comes from the dark god's machinations. It's certainly not as strong as some of the other Disney films of this period, but solid humor, good voice acting, striking character designs, and my personal fondness for Greco-Roman mythology results in Hercules becoming an entertaining experience for me.
