Review of Her (2013) by Nicholasbert — 16 Jan 2014
Very good, not original as many said (if anyone remembers S1M0NE, it's basically the same concept) but tender and, in my opinion, gives out a solid representation of what the near future might look like. I particularly liked the fact that despite being essentially a sci-fi film, it doesn't try to be flamboyant and had a very conscious use of special effects. Asimov argued that science fiction is not a genre, but rather a trope or a setting you could apply to any genre: and this film is proof.
The soundtrack was very well thought-out, and Phoenix gives a credible representation of a depressed lonely man. Scarlett Johansson's voicing is amazing, and she turns out to be a lot more human than Theodore: in fact, there were times when I forgot she is a computer. Amy Adams is good, though we don't see much of her.
And to the people who argue it's an unlikely representation of the future, you just don't know where are we going with technology. Ten years ago, if you told someone that in ten years people would be talking at their phones because they're too lazy to type a message, they would probably have laughed at you. So, to me, the future depicted in Her could be (worryingly) much, much closer than we think.
Beautiful, must see, one of the best of last year.
