Review of Her (2013) by Andrew R — 10 Aug 2014
This movie has a rare elegance. It treats love and relationships more honestly than those with two flesh and blood people. Jonze nails the humor, the honesty, and the humanity with Phoenix channeling some aching vulnerability, and Johansson lending a voice with more passion and pathos than anything else I've seen with her.
We're carried through the stages of a relationship, of love, of life and how one day our loves might outgrow us. I'm especially intrigued by Samantha's surpassing Theodore as both her emotional transcendence, but also her intellectual.
It's a hard thing to realize, but one day, if AI is anything like her, they will very quickly outpace us and leave us behind. If we ever fall in love with them, a melancholy song is all we'll have left.
