Review of Her (2013) by Honore T — 14 Sep 2014
This is categorically the best movie I have seen in the last 5 years. I watched it twice: once on a flight to Europe and the other time returning from there. Both times had me spell bound, even on the iphone ten-years-ago screen size.
At the core of this movie are hard, hard questions about love: What is it? Can it be manufactured? Can it evolve? How do we get out of it after we've fallen in it? And for me, one of the best parts was the depiction of how incredibly important it is to say good-bye properly, (which is infinitely better shown than in Silver Linings Playbook) when the inevitable (or is it?) occurs.
How we say good-bye when the rug has been pulled from under our feet, when the world that we know has been dislodged from its orbit, shows more honestly who we are and our abilities to love than at any other time when love is given freely or abundantly.
The hardest part remains and always will be to say good-bye when you simply don't want to.
