Review of Her (2013) by Jamie E — 14 Nov 2014
The trouble was Her, is surprisingly not it's odd premise, a man falling in love with his computer, but the execution of such an idea. While the production design, score and acting of this film is top notch, I never truly am able to feel the emotional strain and pressures between the two main characters because this film just feels too slow.
There are some beauties of some scenes, normally the ones emphasising the comedic nature of the film, however these are rare. Each point, argument, or idea feels like it drags on and becomes repetitive, a complete surprise for the winner of the Oscar for Best Orginial Screenplay, and as I mentioned, the premise and its explanation is done incredibly well, its just the middle chapters and dreary conclusion that packs very little punch.
Spike Jonze, hits in every technical on screen element and very mcuh deserves credit for turning this bizarre idea into a beautifully visual film, however the editing and pacing is off as the duration runs too long and the idea loses its novelty.
Overall Her is is visually stunning film with elements of a perfect production value. Joaquin Pheonix's performance is heartfelt and Scarlett Johansson brings foward a vivid and stimulating voice.
Sadly these moments of brilliance is let down by the films repetitive and slow middle chapter, its anti-climatic ending and far too long duration.
