Review of Her (2013) by Kaustubh H — 02 Oct 2015
Once in a while, there comes a film that is so exceptionally beautiful that makes you sit up and feel the emotion behind it all. HER is one of them. Exploring virtual reality and modern day relationships in a completely possible future, the film is an extremely solid take on the themes of love, friendship, companionship and joy in a world where technology has made us become alienated from our own kin and kind.
The beauty of HER lies in the fact that it deals with issues both human and technological and stitches them seamlessly back and forth between its characters. Joaquin Phoenix gives an absolutely touching performance and though we can only hear Scarlett Johansson she is delightful as the intelligent operating system.
One cannot help but identify little by little of our own lives and how possibly normal it could feel to have relationships in virtual reality. HER is further bolstered by rich photography and picturization going hand in hand with its beautiful background score.
Equally incisive are its dialogues that are at once heart warming and heart breaking. It is a film with several layers with probably a lot more to it than meets the eye. A truly brilliant piece of cinema.
