Review of Her (2013) by Evan J — 18 Jan 2015
Joaquin Phoenix, one of my favorite actors out there, delivers one of the most heart-warming performances I've ever seen in the most unconventional film to hit theaters in 2013. Theodore is a lonely guy in the wake of his wife leaving him, when he downloads a computer system with a mind of its own.
The love story that follows may seem stupid and ridiculous to some, but to me it is beautiful and symbolic. Beautiful in the way that he is so happy and so fulfilled with just a voice in his ear, symbolic in the sense that it does not matter who or what you love, there are no boundaries.
You can laugh at the idea of people dating computers, but recognize that it is almost a satire, and something that could be a future for us. Phoenix is the only core actor on screen for 90% of the time (accompanied by Scarlett Johansen as Samantha) and he owns it.
You love and feel for him and his quirkiness and socially awkward behaviors. The film is shot beautifully, as it is supposed to take place in the future, and is backdropped by a wonderful score. Amy Adams does well as his only true friend and a voice of reason.
As the film breaks your heart, you realize how attached you were to it, And when it's over, you realize how special it is.
