Review of Henry's Crime (2010) by Alex C — 23 Apr 2011
I really was surprised how much this little crime flick really grew on me. Granted, the film isn't about the crime so much, but about seeing characters grow and find that one great change in their life.
"Henry's Crime" stars Keanu Reeves as Henry, a man whose falsely sent to prison for robbing a bank, but then after he's released, he decides to go ahead to actually rob that very same bank this time.
The bank is an old one, and apparently there was a robbery back in the 20's where the robbers dug under from the old theater across the street. And that's what inspires Henry to do the same. With the help of his cellmate from prison, Max, played by James Caan; he sets on pulling off the caper.
He brings in the help of Julie, the lead actress in the play being performed in the theater, who also ultimately becomes Henry's love interest. Reeves is really well cast here, as his aloof expression really works for the character of Henry.
And James Caan really deserves an Oscar nomination in one of his very best performances in years. Also, want to give a shout out to Bill Duke, who plays the bank security guard; he has a great scene where we learn more about his intentions.
This film paces itself well, and the last scene with Henry and Julie, is both tender and outlandish; but it somehow works. Definitely a film worth seeking out.
