Review of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) by Ashley K — 30 Mar 2010
Tawdry and deadpan, HPoaSK uses its meagre budget to lend a grim realism to the sickening proceedings and without drenching us in gore (mostly due to the riveting/disturbing performance of Michael Rooker).
Despite Lucas' oft-refuted claims of a kill total of 600 women, McNaughton uses only a few of the killer's crimes to illustrate the man and the times, serving up a morose and effective portrayal of one of America's worst killers.
Barring a horrible (in a bad way) soundtrack by the director's brother and a few giggle-worthy special effects, this low-down and dirty little movie rightfully earned its star and director a heap of praise and awards.
