Review of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) by Tamatai N — 27 May 2010
Bleak, gritty, moving, utterly engaging and extremely disturbing, this film most certainly deserves its notoriety. However, unlike many horror films that touch upon this subject matter, it never resorts to sheer exploitation and gore to unsettle the audience.
Instead it offers a completely neutral moral standpoint and presents the events and characters for what they are; in unflinchingly realistic, graphic detail. Sure, it's not perfect, but for a low-budget production, the film-makers managed to do a rather exceptional job.
A must-see for any film fan at all interested in the darker side of humanity.
