Review of Henry Poole Is Here (2008) by Brett B — 11 Oct 2008
A very surprising film that doesn't rely on the usual subtleties of Hollywood, Henry Poole is Here is perhaps one of the finest films of this year.
Luke Wilson gives a remarkable and Oscar worthy performance as Henry Poole, a man whom has been diagnosed with only six weeks to live. We never are told what the disease is, but that is besides the point. He leaves everything behind him and moves into a home where he believes he will be spending his remaining days.
A nosy neighbor discovers a water stain on the side of his home that looks like the face of Jesus Christ. When some people start to touch the "blood" that has appeared on it, they are healed of whatever ailment they are experiencing. "Henry Poole Is Here" is a film about faith and hope, and it does everything right. It is a very touching and moving film, and I have a hard time believing any other film will be able to compete with it on that level this year. A must see.
