Review of Henry & June (1990) by Stewart S — 12 Jun 2007
This film changed my life. I fell in love with Anais Nin to such a degree that I started finding similarities in the way we both thought and went a bit mad when I thought that I was the reincarnation of her.
But back to the film - it made me want to write, madly and passionately. I've kept a diary ever since. It's a truly sensual experience, with perfect casting, and Philip Kaufman is especially good at this sort of arty experimentalism (and not thrillers like Rising Sun).
The whole film is infused with a wonderful atmosphere of literature and earthy excess, and dreamily sweeps you up in 1930's Paris. Uma Thurman is also impressive as Henry's mysterious wife, June.
