Review of Hemingway & Gellhorn (2012) by Bruno V — 08 Jan 2014
"Hemingway & Gellhorn" is a sometimes fascinating look at "Papa" (Hemingway) and his relationship with a war correspondent through some of the worst wars in history. Hemingway's chauvinism and drinking are heavily on display here.
Mixing fictional drama with real life pictures and film stock was an interesting choice for this biopic. The performance by Nicole Kidman as Gellhorn is utterly brilliant. Clive Owen as Hemingway has his moments but is sometimes awkward.
The major problem with the movie is the lack of a theme. The movie sort of rambles on and fixates on Gellhorn being a strong woman and not just a footnote to Hemingway's brilliance. In the movie though, she somewhat seems like a footnote.
