Review of Helvetica (2007) by Hamdan S — 18 Feb 2008
A whole hour and a half about a typeface sounds like an absurdist obsession for the niche few but boy oh boy what a wonderful absurdist obsession it is. No typeface has ever been so everpresent and evoked such joy and revulsion.
We hear a row of colourful talking heads speak about of the typeface, the simplicity of it, how its ubiquitousness made it dull and even fascist to some. We hear off design movements desiring a move away from the clean look and also how the use of Helvetica (and the bastard child, Arial) has evolved and matured and still experimented upon.
Never have I seen a film on design which truly talked to me in the language I understood but "Helvetica" just absolutely spoke to me in volumes.
