Review of Helvetica (2007) by James B — 22 Jun 2011
Would have been great if it would have been 25% as long. A lot of designers saying the same things over and over. Yet, no one really looked at the font from a broader contextualization. No one really stressed internationalism, no one talked about it coming during an era when the United Nations was brand new. No one compared it to modernist architecture. The designer who called Helvetica the font of the Vietnam war was really the only person who looked at things from a truly broad perspective.
Interesting, yet disappointing. At that length you would expect more perspective.
