Review of Hellraiser: Revelations (2011) by Jimbo G — 05 Jan 2012
Hellraiser Revelations fails to live up to it's successful routine since part 4-8 were fantastic sequels this one almost fails miserably. When I first heard that this film was gonna be made I was pretty excited and I was also interested with the plot of the film and I already saw the trailer but guess what it wasn't as good as the old Hellraiser films.
The ninth Hellraiser film has a nice plot but the film has a lot of problems and faults from start to finish although there are some great moments in this film so far. I knew it wasn't gonna be as good as part 4-8 because the film seriously has problems and it seriously went down the hill really quick but it still went up just for a short while only because of so many problems and faults towards the entire movie.
The plot of this movie is pretty simple it mainly is about two kids driving to Mexico and they encounter an old man who gives them a puzzle box and they unleash Pinhead when one of them opened the box and parents starts to search for them only that they encounter Pinhead and his Cenobites during they're search for their kids.
Like I said this film isn't as good as the old Hellraiser movies due to many faults and problems from the opening scene until the end. The movie though has some good moments when I watched it today.
I felt that the film though wasn't gonna be good as the old ones and it was too bad for Dimension films that they made a bad sequel and they just made this film because they will lose their rights to the franchise if they don't come up with another excellent idea to earn the rights of the franchise and I felt bad for Dimension films when they made an average sequel after the success of part 5-8 on Direct to DVD this film was also a Direct to DVD release.
The film has so many problems when I finished watching it and the problem with this film is that since Dimension films came up with a super quick idea so that they're contract rights to the franchise will not quickly ran out is mainly the film is shot on a really cheap budget from start to finish and mainly that includes the settings of the film and the use of horrid CGI effects.
The only CGI effects in this movie is mainly the light in the puzzle box when someone opens the box we see a cheap blue CG light in that scene that is one of the faults and main problems with this film.
Other than that the other problems with the film is the minor pacing issues from start to finish. The pacing of the movie seriously has problems when I was watching the film and this movie seriously fails miserably due to its Minor Pacing issues towards the entire film from start to finish.
The other problems with this film is mainly the acting and lacking of story line and lacking of explanation. The acting in the film is terrible and decent at the same time all of the new casts even the new Pinhead who replaced Doug Bradley seriously didn't do a good job with their performances even the lead actress as well didn't do a good job with her performance as well in the movie this film has a lot of bad and terrible plus decent acting so far.
Now the film also is lacking of explanations for the story there are a lot of questions that were never answered in this movie like how did the puzzle box get to Mexico because in the ending of the last Hellraiser film(Hellraiser Hellworld) the box was left in the hotel after Pinhead kills a guy who opened the box plus who is the guy who gave the box to the two teens and how does he know the Cenobites if he hasn't opened the box those are one of the other main problems with the film so far.
Now on the good side Hellraiser has some fantastic special and amazing practical effects because all the kills aren't CG and I never get tired of watching people getting their skins ripped violently in a graphic way but this movie still isn't as gory as Hellraiser Bloodline which is the bloodiest and the most violent sequel in the series although Hellraiser Revelations is full of graphic violence instead of gore because the movie was super graphic because in the film we see people getting their skins ripped open with hooks and we also get to see faces of people being sliced with either a knife or other weapons as well plus we also get to see a couple of nasty sequences from start to finish.
And the other good thing about this movie is that the film has a couple of elements from the original Hellraiser and mainly the element they borrowed is the scene when Nico tells Steven to kill people for him so that his skin can come back just like in the original Hellraiser when Julia's lover Frank tells her that she must lure men into her house so that Frank can kill them and his skin can come back once he continues killing more people here it followed the exact same way as the original because towards the end of the film there's a twist where Nico is mainly wearing Steven's skin just like the twist in the original Hellraiser where Frank is mainly wearing Larry's skin that's one of the elements borrowed from the original Hellraiser film so far.
Director Victor Garcia tried his best to successfully direct this film but the bad news is the movie failed miserably due to so many problems and faults at least Victor Garcia did a better job with his directing in Mirrors 2 than this movie so far.
This isn't the best Hellraiser film in the Hellraiser series but at least it did a better job than the first and second sequel so far because those two sequels didn't make any sense at all at least this film has some suspense unlike Hellraiser 2 and 3 there's no tension and suspense at all.
Overall Hellraiser Revelations gets a 6/10 because the film has some good moments like elements borrowed from the original Hellraiser and incredible special effects but the film falls short due to the film's problems and faults from start to finish so far.
I'm interested for a Hellraiser remake than another Hellraiser sequel so bring in the remake instead of another sequel and I'm gonna wait for that.
