Review of Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996) by Andrew S — 11 Aug 2011
This sequel largely killed the series, in my opinion. It is a weak sequel where nothing is exciting and the time between action scenes seems deathly long. While there are worse sequels in this series, I say this one killed the series because it was the last that was released in theaters.
Thus, the rest were direct-to-video BECAUSE this movie was so bad (and did so poorly at the box office). This means, in the end, that the rest of the films didn't have to budget to fully show what they really wanted to (and what could've been is sometimes very good and effective).
Also, this one suffers like so many others that try to wrap a complicated story into a nice little package. It really does play down the stupidity of the audience, and the lament configuration really loses its overall creepiness in this film.
In the previous films the lament was generally seen as something from another world that only certain people would be able to open that called that other world to the opener. Humanizing it by making a character out of its builder really takes away that factor and leaves the viewer wondering, "Wait, then how.
..?" This movie is ineffective at the horror elements despite some good effects and gore. Doug Bradley is pretty good in the film, but he really didn't have much to work with. Valentina Vargas is actually highly effective as the devious Angelique until the end of the movie when her character gets really insane.
Also, Kim Myers is in this movie....she kills franchises!!! Overall, an ineffective horror movie that has little regard for the audience's intelligence and actually removes some of the scary from something that held quite a bit of fear.
Oh, and Pinhead goes into space...yeah...
