Review of Hellraiser (1987) by Erik R — 13 Jul 2009
My favorite movie in my favorite genre.
Clive Barker was a writer first. This adaptation of "Hellbound Heart" takes a lot of time in the beginning to build the characters. But when the puzzle box comes out, is when I think the movie really shines.
I miss the days of practical effects and this movie is one of the best, in my opinion. The lighting is wonderful, using bright whites to do what most horror dose with shadows. While most horror movies feel (and usually rightly so) that showing the monster reduces its fear factor, this movie doesn't hold back. And while the Cenobites' make-up is amazing, the story remains more about a families brush with hell than the monsters on the cover.
It might be that I found this movie early in my appreciation of horror films, but I can always come back to it and enjoy it as much as the first time I watched.
