Review of Hellraiser (1987) by Alan L — 13 Aug 2010
Julia in the attic with a hammer. If anyone is going to bump me off I hope it is the amazing Clare Higgins. I vividly remember going to see Hellraiser at the Prince Charles when it was released. Now, all these years later, the film still stands up.
Actually it's in someways better - on blu-ray the picture quality has improved over that first screening, the blood is that much redder! And of course these days Hellraiser is uncut - Bob Keen's make-up effects look tremendous (but perhaps the less said about the monster in the corridor the better!).
Clive Barker's film debut was something original, remarkable and influential. Would we have SAW or Hostel today without the flesh-ripping Hellraiser?
