Review of Hellraiser (1987) by Jonny B — 11 Aug 2011
It is impressive how much Clive Barker was able to accomplish with the effects, visuals, and gore with such a low budget. It's never clear how July falls for Frank since he treats her horribly, which makes what she does for him make zero sense.
Mr. Barker has a grotesque and unique vision that he pulls off well but he is not a great storyteller (not here, anyway) nor is he particularly competent when it comes to character development. As long as you look at 'Hellraiser' as a stomach turning fantasy/horror film with powerful ominous visuals and a great villain with abhorrently-frightful looking cenobites you may have a good creepy time.
