Review of Hellraiser (1987) by Liam U — 27 Sep 2011
Very good concept with a rather decent story, very good make up and some scenes which are superb. The cast aren't bad although there's nothing special about any of them, the cenobites led by Doug Bradley pretty much steal the film. Somewhat gory but still damn good entertainment and horror.
Second viewing, and I must say on reflection I actually quite like the cast. Ashley Laurence is brilliant as a positive final girl, and Clare Higgins revels in her bitch role. Admittedly, one does wish the cenobites got more screen time, but then again it could have been too much of a good thing. 4 stars is accurate, and I still think the make-up effects are superb, the film is just a little let down by some unintentionally laughable scenes with silly monsters. But y'know, it's all still good.
