Review of Hellraiser (1987) by David S — 11 Nov 2011
Clive Barker has managed to make a horror movie step out and above the common norms that dominate most horror flicks. It is evident that there was a lot of effort and well-thought out techniques used in Hellraiser to make it superior to the trash that floods the genre.
This movie not only has well played out characters who we learn to either love or hate, but it has a villain, per sé, that really frightens and sends chills through the body. The lead Cenobite is quite easily one of the most intriguing creatures born from the horror genre, who speaks brilliant lines chiseled into the history of film.
This film has a brilliant script that avoids the cheap shock-drops or clichés, putting it on par with the brilliance of the first Nightmare on Elm St.
