Review of Hellraiser (1987) by Anthony B — 15 Aug 2009
Clive Barker marked his directorial debut with Hellraiser and what a debut!!! The movie is based on Barker's novella "The Hellbound Heart" and it stays pretty much faithfull to the text, the film was made on a miniscule budget but that does nothing to affect the awesome atmosphere created here.
The performances from all the key players here are very good especially Andy Robinson as Larry/Frank and the Cenobites look amazing, like nothing I had ever seen on screen prior to Hellraiser! The movie has spawned seven sequels - some good and some bad but none a patch on the original, a remake has also been rumoured but it would take a lot for it to match this classic piece of horror cinema.
