Review of Hellraiser (1987) by Zane T — 06 Jul 2009
What's interesting is that this movie actually has very little to do with PinHead and the Cenobites. It's like they're the evil Deus Ex Machina waiting in the wings. And there really isn't a protagonist in the traditional sense.
I mean, we root for Kirstie 'cause she's young & spunky & cute, but she's a little too quick to make a deal with the Devil for my tastes. In a way, it's really Julia's emotional journey.
You see her when she's really young & sweet, and see how Frank continues to corrupt her at every turn. Character-wise, it's pretty sophisticated for a horror movie. Let alone the wild cosmology.
