Review of Hellraiser (1987) by Andrew W — 26 May 2009
A true horror masterpiece! One of the best horror films I've ever seen! There were so many good things about this movie. The story is very Lovecraftian and well told. It also still leaves a lot of questions gnawing at you, just like Lovecraft's work.
The cinematography is just excellent. What I love about Hellraiser is it takes its time, building up atmosphere, until shit really starts to get real. And when it does...WATCH OUT!!! It's really freaky, intense, and horrifying! Not since John Carpenter's Halloween have I seen a movie that freaked me out this much! But the crown jewels of this movie have to be the effects and the make-up.
They're so old-school, but they just look amazing. They reminded a lot of those used in The Thing, another of John Carpenter's masterpieces. This movie truly was a work of art!
