Review of Hello I Must Be Going (2012) by David F — 29 May 2012
This film about a 34 year old woman who has to move back in with her parents during a painful and destabilizing divorce manages to treat her unlikely romance with the teenaged son of family friends with real tenderness and warmth while also sensitively depicting her own familyâ(TM)s multigenerational case of quiet desperation.
While the story of how she gets back on her feet is somewhat uninvolving, her romance, which could have been awkward or icky, comes across as believable and honest, particularly due to the brilliant performance of Christopher Abbott as the artistic, confident teenager who has his own problems with his mother which mirror the main charactersâ(TM).
While mercifully absent the usual crude jokes about young adults living with their parents, this film doesnâ(TM)t quite inspire with its tale of rebuilding oneâ(TM)s life after the shock of divorce.
