Review of Hello I Must Be Going (2012) by Brontë Y — 03 Jan 2013
After starring in 1994's beyond-excellent Heavenly Creatures (one of my favorite movies EVER!), Melanie Lynskey has seen her co-star of that flick rise to superstardom and eventually win an Oscar after six nominations (that would be Kate Winslet -- LOVE her!).
Lynskey has put-in some fine supporting turns in some notable flicks (Up in the Air, Ever After, The Perks of Being a Wallflower) but NEVER had a starring role until now. Thank you director Todd Louiso for giving this wonderful actress a chance to shine .
.. and shine she does in Hello I Must Be Going. Lynskey stars as recently-divorced Amy, a thirtysomething whose life has fallen on such rough times she has moved back in with her parents ... who don't know what to make of their basket-case daughter.
When Amy meets Jeremy (Christopher Abbott) at a dinner with her parents' friends (he is the much younger -- as in 19 years old -- son of some of their friends), she makes a connection with a possible soulmate that eventually causes even more concern with her increasingly uptight parents (Blythe Danner and John Rubinstein).
Jeremy's parents also become alarmed when they realize the unlikely pairing might be becoming a couple. Hello I Must Be Going is a refreshingly original take on an unlikely romance and it is made all the better by Lynskey -- who is sub-dued but glorious in the role.
She's come a long way ... and I am so glad that she has been allowed this opportunity. Hello I Must Be Going could easily veer into camp or unbelievable territory; but it never does. It is well-helmed and well-acted.
Give this one a chance ... you might be surprised.
