Review of Hello Herman (2012) by Robert M — 23 Jan 2013
Hello Herman may be written 13 years ago, but the topics are still growing subjects in America: gun control and bullying. Herman Howards is a 16-year-old boy who goes to his school one day and does the unimaginable.
He emails a famous on-line journalist, Lax Morales, to tell his side of the story. Hello Herman explores the connection of bullying, video games, and school shootings. Throughout the interview, the audience learns that Herman has a past history of being bullied at school, losing his young sister, and living alone as his mother is always away at work.
He finds refuge in violent shooting video games and keeping to himself. Lax Morales tries to find the deeper meaning of reason for the shooting while battling his past demons in Georgia. When questions get tough for Herman, he turns the table on Lax by questioning Lax's past and trying to connect his life with Lax's.
Lax battles with his past and tries to connect with Herman. The progression of the friendship from the beginning to the end works well and it also creates the progression for the audience with Herman as well.
Director Michelle Danner does a great job in directing this film and brings a unique take on the subject matter. Like Kimberly Pierce's Boys Don't Cry, Michelle takes on a social issue and brings it to life for the world to be aware.
Her creativity and direction brings the characters to life.
