Review of Hello, Dolly! (1969) by Mark J — 12 Jul 2011
One of the last big Hollywood musicals... and while director Gene Kelly (yes, THAT Gene Kelly) manages to stage some wonderful numbers, he also lets scenes run way too long.
However, even with the bloated running time & overblown production, the material & cast are still charming and the whole thing makes me smile from ear to ear. Watched it again the other night and enjoyed it just as much as I remember.
I am not, btw, one of those naysayers who complain about B. Streisand being too young for the role - probably because Carol Channing makes my skin crawl and thought of watching her for 146 minutes makes me dive for the remote.
