Mixed tone at its best in a popcorn-salted, CGI-filled massgenre, in a fantasy. Del Toro knew that Mignola has frightening and funny comic-stories, so he mixed these qualities. Check out the Mexican's black humoured short-horror, Geometria: maybe that's the predecessor.
