Review of Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) by Kurt F — 22 Jul 2011
This is a great stange film. If you ever watched the masterpiece that is Pan's Labyrinth and thought "What this needs is action." You get it here. The sequel to the 2004 Hellboy is one of those movies that outdoes the original in every way.
Like The Dark Knight compared to Batman Begins, it's just better. It's such a beautiful movie to look at if nothing else, the fabulous camera of Guierlmo Navarro never stops moving as far as I can tell.
The real draw here for non-comic book fans has to be the enormous effort that went into the design of the movie and the creatures within. Not since Star Wars in 1977 (and I sincerely mean that) have we got such extensive creature designs.
There's nothing in this movie that you could say "Seen it." Also, I find the movie to be very funny. It's such a breath of fresh air that comic book films like Iron Man, Kick-Ass and this can now have genuine comedy.
Dark Knight had funny moments, but mostly you're just gripping the seat. So in the end, this is a downright fun movie with an unreal look. Just see it for yourself.
