Review of Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) by Zane C — 15 Aug 2011
Easily one of the best sequels ever, Hellboy 2 has all the odd and strange creatures you look forward to in a Del Toro picture as well as charm and charisma from it's amazing cast that includes the always wonderful Ron Perlman and the voice talent of Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane as the man with no body, Jonhann Kruass. What I love most about this movie ,though, is it's villains and how creepy all of them are and yet somewhat likeable they are as well. Luke Goss created something with his character, Prince Nuada, and made him really pop out and become this really well rounded character. He was also pretty kick ass which made this movie even more action packed than the original. The scene when Hellboy and his gang are all in the market was really fun and witty with jokes being thrown in at the right time in the middle of all the action and the action itself blowing your mind.
Another thing that made this film so great was the CGI. I don't think anyone can add CGI like Del Toro's team can. They mix in the make-up and CGI to make it seem almost realistic and fun. All the action is done with special effects that are so over the top it looks as though you are watching a real comic book come to life and I don't believe that any other movie of 2008 did as well as Hellboy II did. (The Dark Knight was a noir more than comic book so it really doesn't count).
In the end, Hellboy II is sort of the unsung hero of comic book movies. It shows that Batman and Spiderman and all the other typical super hero adaptions have something to look out for in the Hellboy series. Also can't wait to see the Hellboy babies!!
