Review of Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) by Kunal S — 13 Dec 2011
Pretty damn fun. It actually took me a second viewing before I grew to appreciate the original Hellboy so it wouldn't surprise me if this one runs smoother on second viewing also but for now I like the original a tad bit more.
The Golden Army definitely has Guillermo del Toro's visual charm times ten and so this movie is a feast for the eyes. It also affords greater character depth for the ensemble cast in comparison to the original.
Lot of funny bits and good action too. My one qualm is that HB2 fits the blockbuster sequel mentality of "bigger is better" to the point where the story tends to take a backseat to CGI and effects on occasion.
Still, it's an entertaining albeit flawed movie and I'd certainly welcome a third one. Hell, based on certain story elements, I all but expect one...after Guillermo's done with The Hobbit movies of course.
