Review of Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) by Brandon H — 05 Feb 2012

This is a good sequel. In fact better than the first movie. Great production design, action. A bedtime story for the young Hellboy goes like this - Creatures and humans are fighting. The mythical King ask an inventor to create Golden Army made of mechanical parts, indestructible and ruthless.

They defeat humans easily. The king feel remorse and seal the army. Breaking the crown which control the army into 3 parts, with 1 part given to human. They make a truce and maintain peace for centuries.

The prince don't trust the human and go into exile, vow to return one day to bring victory again. Modern day, the prince Luke Goss and his powerful monster guard Wink crash an auction selling a piece of the crown and kill all humans.

The BPRD team Ron Perlman, Selma Blair & Doug Jones, dispatch to the scene and have to fight the tiny critters. Selma uses her flame to kill all. Ron is blasted out of window and expose to the media, make Jeffrey Tambor angry.

Luke go to find his father whom refuse to break the truce. He kills him and get the crown. His twin sister Anna Walton escape with one piece of the crown. Selma found out she is pregnant but don't want to tell Ron.

Only Doug know. The team have a new leader Johann Krauss (John Alexander) who is smart and by the book kind of leader. He revive a critter and know it is from troll market, a place which the team couldn't find.

They import an old gadget to fish out troll in disguise, and found the troll market. Doug saw Anna and Wink is also on trail. She meet an old friend of her father who give her the map of the Golden Army location.

She ask Doug why follow her, both of them have telekinetic power. Ron fight with Wink and it is powerful. But his hand is stuck in a crusher and die. Doug is willing to protect Anna despite John disapproval.

Luke got to know Wink is dead and he summon a tree monster. Ron save a baby and shoot dead the monster. Before killing, Luke question Ron is he going to kill the tree monster which is the last kind exist just like him.

The humans are not happy with Ron. Anna and Doug kind of like each other. She say Luke will find her soon as they are link. John challenge Ron and he punch his glass shatter. Smoke come out and he is dead but not exactly.

He is just in smoke form. Ron and Doug drink beer and listen to love song. Anna hide the piece inside a book and she burn the map. Luke arrive and take the map cylinder, roll on paper to reveal map. Ron fights him and he lose, with a powerful blade pierce in his heart.

Selma want to risk it and go find Luke without the department approval. Surprisingly, John allow them to go on this rouge mission and follow as well. He relate to how she felt as he did before. They reach the island and the creator of the army welcomes them.

He want the blade as gift, so he bring them to his friend Angel of Death. The Angel ask Selma is she going to sacrifice him or the world because in future, Ron will destroy the world. She chose him and the blade is taken out.

The creator bring them to see Luke who awaits them. Doug want to protect Anna and hand the piece immediately. Luke awaken the Golden Army and they fight. John smoke form control one soldier and fights.

They won round one but the soldiers can self repair. Ron quickly issue a challenge to Luke for the control of the army. Ron defeat him but not going to kill him. When he turn back, Luke try to back stab.

Anna stab herself to stop him. They both die and turn to stone. The members quit their job. Selma tell Ron she is expecting twins.
