Review of Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) by Jarrett M — 31 Mar 2012
Hellboy 2 is almost as enjoyable as the first movie, but I found it to be a little less intriguing this time around. I'm not sure why, but it could be as a result of being familiar with the characters or perhaps the story just didn't gel with me as well this time around.
In any event, Ron Perlman is still pitch perfect as Hellboy, and the other returning members of the BPRD are on par with their performances from the previous film. I enjoyed Liz more in this film than the previous film and also liked that Abe Sapien was a more prominant character this time around.
The effects and action set pieces are bigger and more impressive this time and I particularily liked the sequence of the Troll Market and all its interesting characters. I also enjoyed the addition of the character of Johann Kraus and a particularily funny scene in a locker room between him and Hellboy.
Definately for those that loved the first film, but unlikely that it will win the series any new fans.
