Review of Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) by Sean H — 04 Mar 2013
Unique and visually stunning. The characters are great and the locations are amazing to look at. It is a respectable sequel to the first film and expands on the story of Hellboy and his creature companions as they continue to work for the BPRD (Beureau of Paranormal Research and Defense).
This time, elves appear in this story and they aren't the friendly type seen in Lord of the Rings or other fantasy films. These elves mean business, specifically Prince Nuada (Luke Goss) who is out to destroy humanity for ruining the realms of the elves and other fantastical races. As with other Del Toro films, the creatures make the movie and his designs stand out exceptionally compared to the more human characters in the franchise.
Though the movie is based off of the comic series by Mike Mignola it takes its own route with the characters and has its own storyline that deviates from the source material. It is still a good film though and I recommend it for those who enjoyed the first film and want to see the next in line.
