Whereas the first was undermined by budget and choppy story, Golden Army fixes all of the issues and presents a more creative, charming, darkly inventive movie. del Toro gets more chances to show off his love of creature effects and character-driven dialogue to colorful effect, but manages to keep the whole thing incredibly engaging.
