Review of Hellboy (2004) by Nathaniel M — 01 Jan 2011
Del Toro is one of my favorite directors. If all his movies were like Pan's Labyrinth and The Devils Backbone he would undoubtedly be my favorite. However, I feel that his English speaking movies can be tone deaf when it comes to dialog and when given a huge budget to work with, his imagination gets carried away.
The acting is carried out very well for the most part, great underdog story. The Villain is annoyingly cliche, a Nazi Satanist? The finale has a tinge of the redemptive but that is drowned out by it being too noisy. I want to adore this movie, it is essentially a big budget version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer... something is just missing.
