I'm not sure this film would have half as great if del Toro had not been at the helm. The visual style is such a tribute to Mike Mignola's original graphic novel series, and that , in and of itself, had me sold (I suppose being a fanboy of Mignola's helped quite a bit).
Add clever dialogue, some great, organic creature action, and convincing chemistry, and you've got yourself a fun, occult action film...with heart.
