Review of Hellboy (2004) by Phillip H — 22 Aug 2011
The comic book universe on which Guillermo Del Toro's "Hellboy" is based was never grade-A material to begin with, but potential was there to make a strong crossover to film. Unfortunately, Del Toro didn't capitalize, turning in a mostly unambitious by-the-books fantasy/actioner with predictable plot devices and a bit of a disappointing ending.
But even if he couldn't infuse the best of his storytelling abilities into the film, he didn't fail at infusing a stimulating visual design. The sets and costumes are wonderfully inventive, and the makeup creations are beautifully realized.
