Review of Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) by Ericka — 10 Oct 2008
These movies take me back, of course I was still a child when the 1st two came out. I'm not exactly sure when I saw the second, maybe in middle school? However, the first one I was only 11, I think.
It was at that point that I became obsessed w/ everything horror movie until a late teen. It ended up being a phase for me, but I out grew it. I still like to watch one every now and then, but mostly I like thrillers, and I'm more for a horror movie not showing as much gore, now that I'm older, but okay I admit when I was younger I thought it was cool.
Anyway, I agree w/ most everyone as the 2nd to me is better than the first, story-wise, but I also am fond of the first b/c one needs that 'backstory' to really get the 2nd. I've also seen the 3 and 4.
..while 3 & $ were good in their own right, they really lacked the impact of the first 2. The space thing was an interesting touch, but...hmm, I'm a big sci-fi fan as well and it was neat, but.
..well I just don't know how I feel about that. I've only seen 1 oe 2 of the ones after 4, obviously I saw the one again w/ Kirsty, she really is a great heroine figure, and considering I've read "The Hellbound Heart" I'm always shocked Clive Barker writes so well, that even I was going "Yes, as a woman those are feelings/problemswe face".
..Clive's great, but how the 'hell' does he know women so well? Completely nonplussed. I wanted to read the book sequel to the 2nd, it might be called Imanjica, but I never got a chance to read it, but I really want to.
I agree also with person who said the backstory on the Cenobites was interesting--indeed it was! I felt bad for the 'teeth' one who used to be a little kid. This is also the ONLY Hellraiser movie that really humanized Pinhead;it totally shocked me, but I was like cool.
..here Pinhead is an anti-hero (course, when I was a kid I did not know the term, but haha, I knew he was being a 'good' guy in this particular instance only. In other films, he's...well, he's pinhead! haha.
You true fans, know what I mean. I'm glad Pinhead and Kirsty are friends, how sweet (haha) that even in hell one needs friends. And Frank finally get's what he deserves, ah, isn't justice sweet, depriving that man of sex was literally the hellish thing the Cenobites could torture him with haha.
I'll post more on Hellraiser, so look for that review (if you want, it may be the 'already said' but might be good for a few laughs). I also agree, the showdown was totally neat, I was saying "Go pinhead".
..I was the hell cheerleader haha, just kidding. Dr. Chanard was always a D***, he really had no feelings for his patients, he deserved his fate. Isn't it funny that even in a horror movie we get a lesson or moral about life? How weird is that.
I probably won't review all the Hellraiser movies, but I've seen my share. I think I missed a few though, there's a ton of them, but it's cool it's one series that's always kept me interesting.
At one point I had seen all the Halloween's and Friday the 13's, but it soon grew tiring w/ no story, and like a kid in a candy store, I always come back in the end. haha.
