Review of Hell or High Water (2016) by Bart U — 23 Sep 2016
I have a rule, if Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey or Robert Duvall are in a movie-I have to watch it as soon as possible.
This movie has Jeff Bridges so I had to watch. Chris Pine sure didn't hurt the appeal any either.
After seeing the film, I have to say Ben Foster stole my heart a bit as well.
I was a little worried as the movie started and it seemed like the focus was off, yet I could still read the names printed on the screen so I chalked it up as wannabe low budget cinematics. I realize now that it was intentional. You get a feel for the pace and tone as the movie goes along.
I will say the pace is....Texan. Not slow, but a bit drawn out, and since it's set in Texas, this too must be intentional. Beautifully calculated mixed with the most unusual yet stunning music, scenery, and humor. I was laughing at some very inappropriate jokes, but I couldn't help it! They all had some memorable and witty one liners.
Did I mention the scenery? The sky. I've always said the best thing about Texas is how huge the sky is. You can see this in the film, several times. That with the sweat, flies, music, and bank robbing, make it a real "western".
Oh, the acting-I almost forgot to talk about it because it was so good, I didn't feel like any of them were acting, I just felt like I was there. Taken from my real day to day crap and plopped in the middle of Texas on a hellish day 'bout ta have me sum fun. And that's all and everything I want in a movie.
