Review of Hell or High Water (2016) by Stephen P — 26 Oct 2016
David Mackenzie's electrifying, captivating desperado action-drama. About two brothers, one a divorced father, Tanner, played superbly by Ben Foster and the other Toby, played impressively by Chris Pine in a scene-stealing performance, who is a hot-headed ex-convict with a lose trigger finger.
Both Foster and Pine share great chemistry as brothers who plan a series of brazen robberies against the bank that is about to foreclose on their family ranch, to make a better life for Tanner's young son and themselves.
But standing in their way is Marcus, played brilliantly by old pro Jeff Bridges, a crafty, hardened veteran Texas Ranger about to retire in a few weeks. As the brothers prepare for their final heist, they must also get ready for a showdown with this relentless lawman.
Astute direction by Mackenzie, who gives his wonderful film suspense, humor and some heartfelt tragic moments. Gorgeous cinematography by Glles Nuttgens, and a perfect original score by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis.
An engaging modern western. Highly recommenced.
